Temper Trap enjoy trappings of success

Four-time ARIA nominees The Temper Trap aren’t backing themselves for a win at this year’s awards.

Their money is on rock legends AC/DC.

The Melbourne four-piece, who are now based in London, are back in the country to attend the ceremony, where they will perform their hit song Sweet Disposition.

They are also up for album of the year, best rock album and breakthrough artist – for their debut album Conditions, as well as single of the year.

“It would be great to win best album, but I don’t think we’re going to win any of them – as do the bookmakers apparently,” drummer Toby Dundas told AAP.

“The bookmakers have put us a firm last in every category,” guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto added.

“I want to (put some money on it), but I think I might have to go to some tribunal afterwards for insider trading.”

The band say if they were to place a bet, the smart money would be with AC/DC, who they are up against for album of the year and best rock album.

“We’re up against them for best rock album, which clearly they should win,” Sillitto said.

“I mean, they’re the best rock band of all time, some would argue. If they don’t win something they’re being cheated.”

Awards or not, it has been a huge year for the band.

They relocated to the England to further their career, and since scored a number six UK hit with Sweet Disposition.

The song was also featured in the hit film 500 Days of Summer.

“It’s been a bit surreal almost,” Dundas said of their whirlwind success.

The band have been touring relentlessly around Europe, making waves everywhere from Norway to the Netherlands.

“At one stage we were playing six shows a week – from the start of May through to August we were pretty flat out,” singer Dougie Mandagi said.

“It’s been busy but fun at the same time.”

After some more European dates throughout December, the band will return to Australia for the summer festival season, playing the Falls Festival, Big Day Out, Sunset Sounds and Southbound Festival, as well as headlining shows in Sydney and Melbourne.

In 2010 they will tackle the US, with a seven-week tour.

For now, they’re just enjoying the rockstar moments as they come.

“We got to fly over here on our label, because we’ve been so busy,” bass player Jonathon Aherne said.

“We had the privilege of flying, not even business, but premium economy.

“I can stretch my feet out a little bit. That’s as close as we’ve got to rockstar,” he said, to howls of laughter from the band.

Pay it Forward

Have you ever heard of an idea so incredible, so amazing that you thought it was impossible to accomplish. Something so simple, yet requires an amazing amount of faith? This month our youth series used the movie “Pay it Forward” in which a 7th grade boy is challenged with an idea. He was to find a way to change the world and put it into action.

In the movie, the boy comes up with this idea that becomes a movement that inspires and spreads. His idea is to simply do something for three people. It has to be something big, something they can’t do for themselves. Then those three people do something for three people, so on and so forth.

An idea like this is so simple, but has the potential to change the world. It requires, however, a great deal of faith. The incredible thing about this idea is that it’s nothing new. Jesus Christ lived His entire earthly ministry with the pay it forward mentality. He taught His disciples the same thing and then told them to go forth and make disciples of the nations. He teaches his disciples to pay it forward, and they, in turn, should teach others to pay it forward. You know where that leaves us, paying it forward!

Much like the movie, this idea requires a great deal of faith, both in our Lord Jesus Christ and in each other. Jesus fed thousands, healed the sick, and even raised the dead. He continually associated with the poorest and the most needy. Jesus never expected payment for his services, but instead, explained that we should go out of our way to help those in need.

When an official came to Him and asked about eternal life, Jesus explained the pay it forward idea. He explained that when someone is in need we should not just pass them by on the road like the priest and Levite. We should, instead, be like the good Samaritan and help. We are called to not only bandage them, but to ensure they are taken care of. When the official told Jesus that we should love God with everything we have and love our neighbor as our self, Jesus replies by saying “Go, and do likewise” in other words, Jesus says, “Pay It Forward!”
